Go Cowboys!

Blog Last Updated; 11/5/2009

I'm a former Texas girl, so you know I'm also a Dallas Cowboys fan.

However, now that I live in Colorado, I've been tempted to convert to the Denver Broncos. The success they've had so far this season has appealed to my inner fair-weather fan. And if I did switch to the Broncos, maybe then I wouldn't feel like such a duck out-of-water at local sports bars. I could proudly wear the blue and orange and develop a secret crush on Kyle Orton.
I also thought about taking on the Arizona Cardinals. My cousins live in Phoenix, so I thought perhaps they'd let me stay at their house when I got tickets to a game at the new stadium. Maybe they'd even buy me tickets to a game at the new stadium.
Such is my criteria for choosing my professional sports teams.
Winners? Check.
Cute quarterback? Check.
Convenience? Check.
But no. I just can't do it. I can't give up the Cowboys.
It's a family tradition. My daddy loved the Cowboys, and I grew up watching them on TV on Sunday afternoons. I even got to see a few games at Texas Stadium in Irving back in the 70s. Those were the Tom Landry/ Roger Staubach days, when the Cowboys really were "America's Team."
My daughter T is also a Cowboys fan. So is her new husband, and he's not even from Texas. He's a Front Range boy. Now they carry on the Cowboys family tradition on Sunday afternoons in their own living room in Durango, dressing in silver and blue, cheering every touchdown and cursing every interception and turnover. (Unfortunately, there've been a lot more curses than cheers flying around this season.)
And in these up-and-down days of the Cowboys, we die-hard fans find satisfaction in the smallest victories. Take last weekend, for example.
Dallas won their game on Sunday. The Broncos and the Cardinals lost.
Winners? Check!
