"In 2003, Lake Powell had begun to recede to record low levels following several dry winters in the West. In July that year, I joined a writer and an advocate for the restoration of Glen Canyon on a backpack trip down the Escalante River. Our goal was to investigate a long stretch of this canyon that had been revealed by the receding reservoir. We found miles of flowing Escalante River where probably two years earlier there had been houseboats and jet skis, including this stretch where the warm water invited barefoot backpacking."
