Laurel and Steve Arndt climb through the clouds on the southwest ridge of Mt. Sneffels (14,150'). They began the ascent in Yankee Boy Basin at 4:30 a.m. in order to get to the summit and off the mountain before the monsoons swept in with heavy rains and deadly lightning. The southwest ridge offers hikers a more challenging ascent of the mountains with fifth-class scrambling over surprisingly solid granite. The descent can follow the more popular, scree-laden south col back to Yankee Boy Basin. (www.chrisgilesphoto.com)
