HDs Just Another Resource

The first line of Ken Wright's piece on the HD mountains ["Gnawing The Bone" July/August 2007] says it all: "I hadn't been there before." The last line of that paragraph is even better: "I don't need to." Of course you don't, Ken. Why would you need to go there? That would only cloud your opinions with facts. I live next to the HDs; I see them everyday. The fact of the matter is, the only people that actually use the HDs are hunters and ATVers, both of whom I'm sure you despise. Real honest-to-goodness tree huggers like yourself wouldn't be caught dead in the sublime beauty of the HD mountains. There are much prettier mountains north of Hwy 160 to enjoy.

The truth is, the oil and gas for this country must come from somewhere. The Middle East is a mess and always will be. There is nothing stable about the entire region. You and your ilk have made sure Alaska is off limits to new drilling. Natural resources are here to be tapped, just like the plains of Kansas can be farmed, and the prairie in Texas can be grazed. This little public land fantasy playground you live in does not exist in most corners of this country. I hear Canada is nice this time of year, though. Maybe Mr. Wright should move there. - Brad Devader, Bayfield, Colo.
